Newcomers A$ and the Downtown City waste no time as they burst onto the PGH Music Scene

“Don't stop. Keep doing it. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. It can be done.”

Recently hatched into the indie music world, A-Money and the Downtown City is the latest addition to The MIC MVMT, and we are super excited to support them as they embark on their musical journey. These guys are proof of the continuous growth of the indie music industry, even just here in Pittsburgh!

Speaking of our awesome hometown and its iconic skyline, A$ and the Downtown City are a band after my own Yinzer heart. I love Pittsburgh deeply, and it is clear that this group shares the same passion for this city, as well as for their music, and I am excited to see what their inspiration produces for them creatively. Let’s dive in, ‘n’at!

Quick little intro about yourselves and your origin story? People love to hear how bands get their names.

“A-Money and the Downtown City is a lyrically focused band incorporating elements of Rock, Soul, Folk, and Hip-Hop. The group is anchored by songwriter and vocalist Adam Merulli, a veteran to the Steel City music scene as an acoustic artist and spoken word performer who performs both solo and as part of the band. The project stemmed from Merulli often performing at local venues and hosting various open mic nights in the city. Currently they are in the studio working on their debut EP entitled Night/Vision, which is being crowd-funded.”

What do you love most about being an indie band?

“Being authentic and letting the music be uncompromised. Playing to intimate crowds and getting to know and connect with people.”

What are some of your struggles as an indie band?

“Being broke. Having to work a day job. The struggle between time and money. Getting support can be tricky. Balancing passion while paying the bills.”

Any advice for up-and-coming indie bands who want to be like you?

“Don't stop. Keep doing it. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. It can be done.”

Favorite food and drink spots in PGH?

“Caliente in Bloomfield is a great pizza joint (#canconfirm). For live Jazz, you can't beat James Street Gastropub and Speakeasy. Oakland is cool to spend time in.  Schenley Park. Lawrenceville is cool. Mixtape is a very cool bar in the Lawrenceville/Friendship area. We've performed there. The drinks are amazing, and it's probably the most open atmosphere around.”

What else is going on in your world?

“We're currently raising funds for our first EP. You can find out more information here.”
